What’s the same and what’s different?
Almost everything is the same.
What’s Different?
Well, just like in the DGA, we’ve listened to the comments and concerns of our members and have made a few modifications in the rules and the way tournaments are played. Some of our members aren’t participating in tournaments because they don’t feel their profiles are competitive and don’t have the time to build them up. Almost all of our members are frustrated with the way AHOs and dynamic handicapping appear to be affecting results.
Here are the changes that we’re trying out in Season 1 of the WiiGA to address these concerns:
2 Leader Boards
This season we will try out having 2 Leader Boards (LBs) instead of 1. The LB lists will be determined from the averages per round from Season 3 of the DGA. The average round for all players with at least 3 of 10 tournaments completed was 55.94. Rounding up, players with averages lower than 56/round will have their scores placed on the first LB1; players with averages equal to or higher than 56/round will have their scores placed on the LB2. New members or members with fewer than 3 tournaments completed in Season 3 of the DGA will have their averages determined after their 3rd WiiGA tournament. New members cannot be listed on a leader board until they have logged 3 tournaments and established an average. The leader board split is only for tracking scores. All players, regardless of leader board placement for their scores, will play the same tournaments and will play matches with each other regardless of the destination leader board for their scores.
Players having their scores assigned to LB1 cannot change the leader board score placement during Season 1. Players having their scores assigned to LB2 can request to have their scores listed on LB1 if they choose; however, no change is allowed after the second tournament is completed. If a move is requested from LB2 to LB1, a reversal of that movement is not allowed during Season 1. The intent of having two leader boards is to make it possible for players who have felt non-competitive to be able to play and compete with players of similar skill levels.
Use of Stock Players:
Season 1 of the WiiGA will try out the use of stock players instead of player profiles for each tournament. However, Mike Wier may be substituted for any tournament out of respect for anyone who is left-handed with the exception of the tournament in which the required profile is female. When that is the case, all members must use the female profile.
The use of stock players is an attempt to create a more level, competitive playing field for our entire membership. While AHOs and game interventions may still take place, they will be governed by the characteristics of a commonly used profile, rather than the variances among personal profiles. In the end, we believe that player skill will be the primary factor in determining results. We will be watching how this works closely, and will make adjustment when and if circumstances dictate.
Unranked Matches
A significant change to the WiiGA during Season 1 will be the rule that offical WiiGA matches will all be unranked instead of the current rule in the DGA that they be ranked. This is due using stock profiles as a leveling of competition in the WiiGA. Doing so raises questions about how such matches might affect EA rankings. Rather than get into that debate, we have decided to require official matches to be unranked, thus separating EA rankings and WiiGA leader board listings.
These are the key changes for the first season of the WiiGA from what you experienced as a DGA member.
We realize that this is a brief summary of what we are trying to do to launch the WiiGA. We urge you to sign up, look at our further explanations on the WiiGA, and help us find out what we may still need to decide. To help us with this, we will be setting up a FAQ thread on both the DGA and WiiGA sites. We encourage you visit the thread and tell us what you still need to know. As we answer your questions, we’ll set up a permanent FAQ thread on the WiiGA site that will help new members get to know us more quickly.
Thanks, and see you at the WiiGA!
